About Red Sanders & Sandalwood

(Pterocarpus santalinus)

Red Sanders & Red Sandalwood is a species of Pterocarpus native to India. It is specially found in South India on the Tamilnadu & Andhrapradesh Border.
It is alight-demanding small tree growing to 8m tall with a trunk 50-150 cm diameter. It is fast growing when young. reaching 5m tall in three years even on degrated soils. The leaves are alternate, 3-9cm long, trifoliate with three leaflets. The flowers are produced in short recems. The fruit is a pod 6-9cm long containing 1 or 2 seeds.

There are 2 type of trees i.e. RED SANDERS & SRI GANDHAM. There are different types of trees in the world. It is very important & multi useful tree. In Telugu we call it Sandals or Sri Gandham. In our local practice we call it Gandham Chekka. We can plant it in Residential plots, agriculture fields and etc.
We can plant 435 to 450 plants in 1 acre and also cultivate various crops upto 3 years in the cultivating land.

Use of RED SANDERS

Red Sandalwood Powder, also known as Rakta Chandana Powder, has been used in Ayurvedic Medicine as an antiseptic, wound healing agent, and as anti-acne treatment. Red Sandalwood Powder can be into a paste with honey and water and use directly on the face. It can also be combined with Ashwagandha & Cosmetic Clays or Mud for a detoxifying facial. Red Sandalwood powder is used in soap to yeild a dark maroon to purple colour. Try using 1 Teaspoon of Red Sandalwood Powder per pound of soap. It should be added at light trace.
It widely used in Pharmaceutical Industries & also used in making Musical Instruments. Red Sanders grows 8-12 meters height.
